Al-Zour Refinery Project

Al-Zour refinery is the largest oil refinery in the world to be built in a single phase. The refinery is located 90 kilometers south of Kuwait City and has a refining capacity of 615,000 barrels of Kuwaiti oil per day. The design of facilities for support services, facilities, and manufacturing units was developed and implemented by several international refinery licensees, namely ChevronLomas Global, Shell Global Solutions, Haldortopso, and Fluorometid. It is contributing effectively to improving the air of the Kuwaiti environment by reducing by 75% the polluting gases emitted by power plants, by providing them with low sulfur content environmental fuels. It will be built with the latest engineering designs while maintaining the highest standards of safety, health, and the global environment. The refinery is designed in the form of three mini-refineries, to enhance operational reliability, as each miniature refinery has an air distiller unit, a residual oil desulphurization unit, and a hydrogen diesel, jet, and kerosene processing unit, to become the largest sulfur desulfurization complex in the world. Each miniature refinery is linked to centralized service units, such as reservoirs and supporting facilities, such as gas assembly units, hydrogen production units, hydrogen extraction and compression units, sulfur collector units, and utility units. The refinery is distinguished by the non-discharge of manufacturing water during normal operation, which is treated in a system of no discharge and reused. The existence of a flame gas recovery system to minimize the flame, the provision of smokeless ground flares and low noise, and the provision of continuous air monitoring and monitoring stations for air quality by the standards and conditions of the General Environment Authority. A new dock, extending about three kilometers from the coast, will be established for the export of sulfur solid products, by shipping single ships with a maximum load of up to 60,000 tons.
