14-09-2024

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Haitham Al-Ghais said today, Saturday, that "the birth of OPEC on September 14, 1960, marked the beginning of a new era in the energy industry in general and in multilateral dialogue in the energy sector and the economic sector globally." This came in a joint press statement made by Al-Ghais to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) and Kuwait TV on the occasion of the organization's celebration of the 64th anniversary of its founding. At the beginning of his speech, the Secretary General of OPEC congratulated His Highness the Amir of the country Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God protect him, and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, recalling the pioneering role played by the State of Kuwait in the organization's journey at all stages, starting from its founding until today. Al-Ghais said, "Today, we remember with pride and honor the historic meeting held in Baghdad on September 14, 1960, which witnessed the birth of OPEC by five founding countries: Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, and Venezuela." Al-Ghais stated that the organization "has remained, for decades, faithful to and committed to the principles and values it has adopted since its establishment until today, which is to maintain its leading role in supporting the stability of the oil market and thus supporting the stability of the global energy market." The OPEC Secretary General reviewed what the organization has achieved throughout these long decades, noting the important historical and leading role of the State of Kuwait in the organization and its contributions and keenness to ensure the success of its work over the past 64 years through the work of its representatives who have succeeded one another in the organization, including workers, employees, governors, national representatives and ministers. He said, "This distinguished Kuwaiti presence in OPEC indicates Kuwait's sound forward-looking vision and its awareness of the utmost importance of the energy industry in the global economy." On this occasion, the OPEC Secretary General extended his congratulations and gratitude to all member states, including heads of state, kings, heads of government and ministers, for their support for this organization and its activities at various levels. The Secretary General of OPEC also praised in his statement the contributions made by the previous Secretaries General of OPEC over the past decades, which made it currently occupy a prestigious position and enjoy high appreciation and trust at the global level. The Secretary General described the celebration of the 64th anniversary of the founding of OPEC as an important occasion and an ideal opportunity to focus on the role of the organization and its journey over the past decades. He said, "Despite our focus on the successes achieved over these decades, we also look forward with confidence to the future and realize that it is full of challenges, but at the same time we believe, and perhaps we are certain, that the coming days of the organization will be prosperous for many years and decades, thanks to the continuous support of the member states and the clarity of the vision of the organization's goals despite all the challenges facing the energy and oil markets in general." It is worth noting that OPEC was established in September 1960 following an extraordinary meeting in the Iraqi capital (Baghdad) of senior officials representing the five founding countries of the organization, namely Dr. Fuad Rouhani from Iran, Talat Al-Shaibani from Iraq, Ahmed Sayed Omar from Kuwait, Abdullah Al-Tariqi from Saudi Arabia, and Dr. Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo from Venezuela. This historic meeting of the five founding fathers resulted in the birth of the organization, which opened a new page in the history of international cooperation and the oil sector.
