This morning, Wednesday, the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Oil organized a virtual seminar entitled “Climate Agreement… What is it and what is it for”, in which the official in charge of the climate change file in the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) Abdul Karim Ayed, which was attended by a number of employees of the Ministry of Oil. At the beginning of the discussion, Director of Public Relations and Information at the Ministry of Oil Sheikha Tamader Khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said that the State of Kuwait adopted within the 2040 strategy to reduce harmful emissions and shift towards the use of renewable energy, as plans and programs for sustainable development were approved at the national level in order to transition to an economic system. Low carbon emissions.
Sheikha Tamader pointed out that the efforts made by the Kuwaiti oil sector to reduce gas flaring rates, which have reached very low rates during the past years, is a historic achievement to preserve the Kuwaiti environment, and the launch of the project to import liquefied natural gas in the Al-Zour region is also considered one of the promising projects. Which reduces harmful emissions and opens wider fields towards switching to clean energy represented in natural gas.
On the other hand, Sheikha Tamader Khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah said that the Ministry of Oil is keen to hold several seminars covering all oil and economic fields to achieve public benefit and improve oil awareness through the petroleum culture project, especially through special seminars for researchers, specialists, officials of companies, institutions and ministries in Kuwait. at all their levels.
For his part, the official in charge of the climate change file at OAPEC, Abdul Karim Ayed, said that in light of the rising global interest in climate change issues at the international level regarding the developments of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from Rio to the twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties that was held in Glasgow, United Kingdom within a month. Ayed stated that the Glasgow Climate Agreement "COP26" would maintain international hopes of avoiding the worst effects of global warming. Climate (IPCC), noting that the world today is 1.1-1.2°C warmer than it was in the pre-industrial era, and that warming above 1.5°C will lead to more devastating droughts and crop failures.
He reviewed the most important initiatives during the COP26 summit, represented by the pledges to deforestation and the global pledge on methane and disposal.
It is also worth mentioning here the initiative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Green Middle East and the application of the concept of a circular economy to carbon as a mechanism that contributes to addressing carbon emissions.
